As a trained chef, recipe creator, wine and cheese lover, and European Travel guide – it’s always wonderful to learn about new ways to enjoy cheeses and traditional food products in my cooking and hosting. I was recently treated to a fabulous private dinner hosted by and featuring Pecorino Romano PDO cheese all through the menu in the most creative ways with a gorgeous view of downtown NYC and wine pairings to boot. Not just a delicious and fun event, it also highlighted the incredible versatility of this flavor packed cheese.

The Versatility of Pecorino Romano PDO

So much more than just for garnishing pasta – this fabulous tasting menu showcased all the many ways Pecorino Romano PDO can be enjoyed in your recipes.

To start we enjoyed “Bocconcini” of fried Pecorino Romano PDO balls with a Farro Dip that’s been a tradition since the Roman era. We also enjoyed an incredible Caponata on Veggie Chips enhanced by the cheese’s rich nutty flavor.

Next was a gorgeous mixed green salad with autumn pears and a creamy dressing enhanced by the deep flavor of Pecorino Romano PDO and possibly one of the most fun soup and sandwich pairings I’ve enjoyed in a while! A mini grilled cheese of seared Pecorino Romano PDO on sourdough bread was served next to a rich fire roasted pepper “soup” for dunking.

For our main dish, a hearty classic, Chicken Cacciatore was made all the more delicious with Pecorino Romano PDO in the crispy crust on the chicken served with a deep roasted tomato sauce and fluffy yet crunchy seared polenta.

I’m glad I saved room for dessert! And yes, it also featured Pecorino Romano PDO paired with honey in Sweet Cheese Dumplings made with crisped wontons and served over rich cookie butter. The lightly tart, sharp flavor of the cheese was the perfect complement to the sweet notes in this incredibly creative dessert.

As this event demonstrated; Pecorino Romano PDO should be a staple ingredient in all home kitchens to add flavor and enjoy in so many different ways!
